Kate's Favorite Things #5...and#4

So if you are just dropping by be sure to check out the rest of my list thus far: #10, #9, #8, #7, #6

Alright so I have gotten a little back up with all the
chaos of the holidays and so in an effort to still get to number one before New Years I thought I would double up on these last few posts. With no further ado...

My Number 5 is..... My BlackBerry
I had been hearing people go on and on about these silly little phones for way to long it seemed. Ok so its a fancy cell phone - whoop-de-do-ding. Then several of our friends that have blackberry's started filling us in on why they liked them so much. We started our hunt not long after that and ended up walking away from the store with two blackberry's on plans with Virgin Wireless (which are awesome by the way!!) What sold us?? It was not facebook or even the easy access to the Internet - which are both very handy by the way. It was actually the Blackberry Messenger. Basically any of our contacts that also have a Blackberry we can message for free. Which is great - it is way more convenient than texting and cheap cheap cheap :) We end up using this feature more than any other I think. The other great thing about the plan we are on is that Ed and I can call each other all the time without running up the bill. Yay.

Now for #4...
The Olfa Rotary Blade
If you are a crafty person or sew I am sure you know all about this next one...
This one is so cool and I only recently discovered it. I have dabbled with sewing and made one little quilt for my son so I already had a healthy respect for a good pair of scissors but this Olfa blade is in a class of its own. I am currently working on a denim Rag Time quilt and in an effort to avoid my hand forever cramping I went to the store to see what they had to offer. The store clerk pointed me to the Rotary Blade...Bless her soul! As soon as I got it home I got to chopping...it is fast and smooth and easy peasy to use. Just beware though - I have heard tales of horrendous cuts from these super sharp tools!

Kate's Favorite Things #6 ....

So if you are just dropping by be sure to check out the rest of my list thus far:
#10, #9, #8, #7

So this next one continues to prove itself invaluable to me...which is made even better by the fact that is was free to begin with!

My Number 6 is...
The Gnu Image Manipulation Program
Affectionatley known as 'The Gimp'

GIMP does have some short commings and so I will get them out in the open and be done with it. Initially GIMP can be a little intimidating as it is not, shall we say, user friendly. Although this is easily overcome with spending some time google-ing the huge variety of tutorials that are available for GIMP. Now to fill you in on all the fun stuff you can accomplish.
LAYERS!!!
This is an amazing and powerful tool to use when photo editing. Picture a pile of transparencys that when stacked form a complete photo. The great part is that you can edit individual elements of a photo without alterering the rest of it!
COLOUR MANAGMENT
Just like any basic photo editing softwear GIMP also has colour managent tools. Except that it`s colour management tools are so much more powerful that you will never look back. I remember trying to edit full images with just brightness, contrast and RBG sliders. UGH! GIMP allows for so much more creativity by providing a whole team of Colour tools - Levels, Curves, Thresholds, Colourizing tools and more.
GRAPHIC DESIGN
Now if the photo thing – isn`t your thing GIMP may still be for you. It can be used for graphic design and even animation if you are of an ambitious sort. I don`t want to belabour this point too much but it really is a phenomenal program that is super powerful and once again FREE!! GIMP.org and download it for free.

Kate's Favorite Things #7...

So if you are just dropping by be sure to check out the rest of my list thus far:
#10, #9, #8

So here comes #7...if you are scrolling slowly with some trepidation after reading #8, you can relax - there will be no more awkward surprises from here on out!
This is one of those things in my life that I consider a necessity, although I know by all rights it is a luxury.

Now unveiling, in a completely non-brand specific way, my #7

My Dishwasher!!!
(Which by the way happens to be a new Maytag)

Ok... so this story has deep roots. My parents were great at teaching us kids responsibility and other such life lessons through the use of chores. My least favorite of these chores was doing the dishes. It wasn't that they took a long time or that the job itself was particularly horrendous - it was just that it was completely devoid of any satisfaction. Usually when you finish a task you can look around and feel somewhat satisfied by a job well done. Not so with dishes because realistically the job is NEVER done! Inevitably someone drops off a missed cup or a pot needs to soak...and if this doesn't happen sometime in the next hour, if not less, someone will use a dish and leave it by the sink. Ugg.

Lets flash forward and leave out a lot of the gory details. Ed and I had been married just about 2 years and we move into our new apartment just in time to have our first baby. The only downside to the place (other than a 'natural wood feature wall' - who does this!!) was the fact that it had no dishwasher and a single sink. Before Eliana arrived I told myself it didn't matter...we'd make do.
EIEIEIEYI!!
Lets just say that the following 10 months that we lived there were very long!!! When we looked into buying our place that we are in right now....my first question? "Does the dishwasher come with it!??!" (Ed did explain that we could buy a dishwasher for any house we moved into but that wasn't enough....it needed to be in there!!)

Flash forward again to earlier this year. Our dishwasher, that yes came with the house, was dying. I was getting desperate. Dishes began to live in the dishwasher as I washed them over and over and over in a vain attempt to clean them without touching them!!
I cringe at the thought of how much water I wasted. Then one, sad day the dishwasher died. I once again talked myself into doing dishes by hand. *Sigh* A futile effort. Soon Ed could see that the dish situation was getting to me. (Isn't he just turning out to be the hero of this top ten list!)
We went out with our dear friend, Mr.Visa, and picked up the dishwasher you see before you.

My favorite feature of this puppy is the garborator that prevents it from getting plugged up with food bits. Love it. I was so excited by the results I would spontaneously break into the hallelujah chorus while putting my dishes away (I'm serious, I really did!)

So I don't know how much brand matters on this one but I have to say that I have been very happy with ours. We didn't go top of line but we didn't cheap out either. The two things that sold us on this particular model - where the stainless steel tub and the garbarator. Still pricey but well under $1000 which was important to us - oh and Mr.Visa.

Kate's Favorite Things...#8

So if you are just dropping by be sure to check out the rest of my list thus far: #10, #9

Alright I don't know how many men ever happen upon this blog but if you are a man and find yourself reading this consider yourself warned....the following is full of female only content.

So for #8 I struggled. This product is absolutely revolutionary in my mind BUT it is of a delicate nature and is definitely not table talk. So if you are eating, stop.

So without further ado my #8 pick is....

Always Infinity Pads. YUP That's Right PADS.

Following is the official Always web-spiel on this cool new product...I thought they could say it more sensitively than what I came up with (Cool new Pads that don't leak and don't chafe!!)

Anyway how about you hear it from the professionals...

The world’s first pad of its kind, Always Infinity offers women powerful absorbency like never before. It’s made with an über-absorbent material called Infinicel that has the power to absorb 10x its weight, yet remains amazingly light. With a revolutionary wing design that fits the curvature of your panty, microdots designed for fast absorption, and an incredibly soft cover, Always Infinity is a pad like no other.

* Incredibly Soft Cover Sheet — It’s designed to work with the pad’s Infinicel core to help you feel dry.
* MicrodotsTM for Fast Absorption — At the center of each pad you’ll find MicrodotsTM engineered to help quickly guide fluid deep inside and away from you.
* Revolutionary Wing Design for Secure Protection — Super flexible wings hug the curvature of your panty and provide optimal coverage at your panty’s sides.
* Form-Fitting Channels for Great Leakage Protection — Our form-fitting channels move with your body for an intimate three-dimensional body fit and great leakage protection.
* Designed to be Wider in the Back — Providing increased coverage where you need it most.

Anyway this may be a rather odd blog but seriously - so cool. Enough said.

Kate's Favorite Things #9...

So if you are just dropping by be sure to check out the rest of my list thus far: #10

Well #9 was not one of those planned purchases this year. I honestly think it was an act of desperation by a loving husband to either spare my sanity or our dog. Anyone who follows my blog or knows me for more than a few minutes (somedays!) Knows we have a severely troubled dog. One of her annoyingly bad habbits is to break into the garbage and drag it all over every carpeted area she can find.

Again Enter another Sanity Saver...(hum a tune please)

The Hoover Steam Vac Dual V Carpet Cleaner

This little baby has redeemed more than its fair share of days this fall. We used to either call someone in or go and rent one of those big red things from the grocery store....how often though??? Seriously maybe once every six months. Let me tell you when you have a dog spreading garbage and then a 3 and 1 yr old to boot - every six months does not cut it. I would house a small army of spot cleaners and sham wows in a feeble attempt at maintaining the appearance of a clean floor.

Since I got this Hoover I have cleaned our entire carpet 4 times - ie once a month!! I even pulled it out the other day to just clean the heavy traffic areas that were getting a little gungy. LOVE it!! This machine is super simple to use and much easier to manuver around than those red things! If you follow the directions the floor is able to be walked on in sock feet in only a couple of hours! So fantastic.

Price point keeps this one a little further down the list but honestly it has been worth every penny. We did figure out that it was the equivalent of renting a red one two-three time and hiring somebody to come in one-two times. So it has already paid for itself in less than six months and really can you put a price on Sanity ;)

Kate's Favorite Things #10

So seeing as Oprah gets to share her favorite things at this time of year I thought I would take the opportunity to do the same thing! I do have a bit of an obsessive personality so when I find something that works how I want it to I don't just like it - I LOVE it.

So heres # 10 of my Top #10 of 2009

Playtex Sippy Cups

This may seem silly if you don't have kids yet but trust me - sippy cups can be the bane of your existence. Some leak (even thought they say they are no leak), some with the soft tops wear out so fast you wonder if you are personaly sponsoring the company. Some no-leak valves are so hard to drink through your kids think you are punishing them in cruel and unusual ways. Don't even get me started on valves....the Gerber valves...eiyiyi - I am sure that the plague was hiding in those silly valves no matter how hard I tried to clean them.

Enter, My hero, the Playtex Sippy Cup Line up ***Please play heroic theme music here***

These Cups are completely interchangeable. Same valves, same lids. They don't leak and most importantly to me I can clean the
valves with ease. My kids have never had problems drinking out of these cups which is always a bonus.
Now that Eliana is older I have moved her onto the straw version of these cups with the same great results - and you know what I can interchange the bottoms with the straw tops as well. **Sigh of Bliss**

The price point for these babies is right on par with all the competitors but the difference is these will last and not cause you headaches a hundred different ways.

Kate

PS - Watch for the rest of the items on my top 10 list throughout the month

I Heart Faces - "Sun Flare"

So this was my first go at trying to catch some Sun Flare in my pictures on purpose!! I had a lot of fun giving it a go...This photo was taken when we were out on top of a mountain the other day finding a Christmas tree the old fashioned way. Great family day and I think the last day of full sun I have seen!!

Scary....

So yesterday morning was one of those moments that your heart flies into your throat and you just feel sick to the core of your being.

I was actually still in bed when Ed got up to get Eliana some milk. He called me from the kitchen and said, " Kate did you leave the Children's Tylenol out last night??"

The answer was no, I had not...I had put it back in the fridge where I thought it had to go. It had a child safe cap so I thought it would be alright but apparently they are more of a child slower-downer, than a child stopper.
The night before there had been half a bottle of Tylenol left and the bottle sitting on counter was e m p t y....

The next trick was to figure out who had drank....Of course Eliana was the one to get into it but she has developed quite the habit of feeding Gabe and in the end we didn't know who drank how much. (I was secretly hoping that she had fed it to the dog - that would two problems solved!!) To say the least I was stressing. I was bundling everyone up for a trip to the emergency when Ed suggested I call poison control first.

Long story short...the poison control lady did the math and found that even if Gabe had drank the whole amount it would have still come under the dosage where there could have been serious complications.
***SIGH***

What a yecky feeling. I dumped out all the liquid medicine in the fridge that did not have child "proof" caps and the rest I put up into the locked cupboard.

I hope we don't need cough syrup anytime soon because it just went down the drain.

Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu

So I have to say that I have always been one of 'those' girls. You know the ones - the ones that started out playing in the mud and collecting bugs and ended up as video game freaks. It's not to say that I'm not feminine or into girly things...its more that I've just always been drawn to activities that are not classically female past times.

Point in case, Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu. Now if you talk to me on any sort of regular basis you will know that my husband is a jiu-jitsu freak. He started just about 5-6 months ago now and he LOVES it. You would have also heard me jokingly complain about how much I get "beat up" (I use that term very loosely) Basically after class Ed comes home totally pumped and wants to show me all the new submissions and moves that he has figured out. Initially I would roll my eyes and ignore my own fascination with this fighting style. A relatively new friend of mine and someone I consider to be quite the kindred spirit (she loves video games too!)had been trying to talk me into joining BJJ as much as Ed had been. I still was torn about it. Stay at home moms are not supposed to be going out in the evenings to fight, right?? Where's the grace and elegance...although I suppose a good arm bar has a little bit of both involved in it ;)
SO
I went to my first class on Wednesday.

I totally loved it. I came home all pumped and wanted to show Ed what I had learned. Some girls can sew and cook and have a clean house and are domestic goddesses - Most days of the week I aspire to be like them. Although very soon I am going to take a couple of evenings each week I am going to go and lay my domestic side aside and try to learn how to choke someone out.

I Heart Faces - Pink !!!

The timing of this photo challange is perfect. This week was my Grandmothers 90th Birthday Party....and she is a Breast Cancer Survivor. It was a wonderful party where we were able to celebrate the amazing woman she is and all the obstacles she has overcome in almost a century of life. Here's to you Grandma!

A Piece of Cake...Part 2

So for those of you that may be wondering...

I finished THE cake.

It was surprisingly uneventful once I got past the custard. The icing was threatening to be very difficult until Ed, sensing my tenuous hold on my composure, rescued me by standing beside me giving directions.

In retrospect, this is rather ironic as Ed is normally the man that wouldn't cook or bake to save his life, but he seemed to think that this whole cake icing business was his cup of tea and walked me through the whole process...

"No, scratches Kate, keep dipping the knife in the water every second stroke..."

So yes, I finished and now all I have to do is get it to the party without dumping it on its head.

Wish me luck....

PS - I found this funny link earlier today and it just fit with my whole week...check out some cake disasters here

A Piece of Cake...Part 1

Really why do we use this saying, "Its a piece of cake".... It means it is going to be easy right?!? Maybe the illustrious 'they' were referring how easy it is to EAT a piece of cake....Not to MAKE one...

Allow me to explain..

My Grandmother is turning 90 this month and we are throwing her a birthday party this weekend. It is such a spectacular milestone and one that I am so happy to be a part of; so when I was asked if I could make the cake I jumped at the opportunity.

I started planning the cake in my head right away. I knew it had to be a lemon cake, Grandma loves lemon, and I wanted to make it marvelous. I deduced that a custard filling and a butter cream icing would be perfect. I also wanted it to look fantastic so I went about learning how to make flowers out of gum paste, which by the way is SO much fun, to decorate the top of the cake with.

So far, so good.

Welcome to reality. Two layer cake that serves 40 people - 4 9x13 cakes...not so bad when you have an oven!!! Mine decided to go out in a shower of pretty little sparks two weeks ago. I actually got to bake the cakes at my moms on the weekend so it should have been clear sailing from here....

Step two - Make a custard filling. Seriously, custard is like cooking 101 and I would like to consider myself at a least a level 102, so why oh why can't I make custard.

I have 3 letters for you A.D.D.

Burnt, over cooked, under cooked you name it I did it. I went through over 4 Lt's of milk trying to make a decent custard filling. ARRRRGGGG

At 5:30 this evening I finally made something resembling a custard filling. Victory.
At 5:45, before running out of the house to go to a meeting, I thought to myself, "I should quickly put the custard layer on the cake so that the cake can get wrapped up and back in the fridge."
At 5:46 I had a meltdown. Literally, the custard was not yet cool enough and or undercooked or something and as I poured it onto the cake is quickly poured itself right back off.

At this point I didn't know weather to laugh or cry. Right now I am laughing but I think in the moment I would have rather cried.

I put the layers together and told myself, "No one will notice that the bottom half of the cake is a gooey custardy mess...."

I would have posted a picture of the sad condition of this cake but my husband, I think recognizing the cake's part in my rapidly declining sanity, had it all cleaned up and put in the fridge by the time I got home from my meeting.

So here I am at 11:00 at night wondering what I am to do with my mess of a cake and I think I am going with plan "A"

Serve it.

Tomorrow I decorate...*Sigh*
I love my Grandma, what can I say.

Excited Electrons - I heart Faces "Excited"

LOL
Ok I know this is traveling a different path on the whole excited theme, but I just couldn't resist. In electrical terms to excite means to energize...so we excited our daughters hair :)

This photo truely was a snapshot of a moment and so I had a bit of fun and played that up a little in the editing.

Thoughts on Becoming Piglet

OK, so I need to clarify, in referring to myself as piglet I am not referencing my ability to pack back the snacks; although, this being the Thanksgiving/Halloween season I sure have been!! Rather it reflects how I am comming to view myself - as Winnie the Pooh's, well intentioned but cowardly friend.

You see I have been feeling a little conflicted as of late without really being able to pin down what was exactly bothering me. Don't you hate that!! Of course this blog is a culmination of several different conversations and life lessons that have all brought me to this point. One thought that has been very prevalent these past few months is the idea of being faithful with whatever we have been given. BIG.
little. Whatever it is - to be a faithful steward.

For those of you with a bit of bible knowledge this echos the parable of the talents. When this whole journey started I was just handed the responsibility of our family finances...yikes!! For anyone who knows me at all you might be able to guess that math and other such anomalies, like numbers, are just beyond me. This being said though I wanted to take on this challenge and "Be faithful".

Where my conflict began is when the idea of faithfulness started creeping into other areas of of my life. Two separate parts of my journey here collided...this idea of faithfulness met Proverbs 31, the noble woman.

Damn, I think I found the perfect way to fail.

So now faithfulness has just taken a leap from good accounting - to something else entirely. Talents no longer just represented how we spent our money but more so what I was doing personally with the passions that lay buried at the moment in my own heart. The question that has been plaguing me is, "what do I do with them!!??"
And unfortunately the answer I know, USE THEM, is some how not so easy to swallow. The lump in my throat is pure fear and cowardice. On one hand this does seem like a pretty feeble excuse.

On the other hand I am suddenly sympathizing with the third servant. What if rather than just lazy he really was just afraid of failing, rejection, or disappointing his master. What if he, recognizing that his talent was lesser - I mean he was given the smallest amount - recognized that he could only ever achieve mediocre results. That's daunting. Obviously the master and I have differing opinions on this third servant. Which of course sucks because the Master is Christ and he and I are not seeing eye to eye right now. Although there is something that is reverberating around in my soul speaking to me even now. I think a key might lie somewhere in an idea I read about this week, God confidence, maybe in the this case it could be renamed Master confidence. What if the third servant had confidence in his Master enough to know that if he gave him a talent it was for a purpose bigger than sitting in a hole in the ground. Just because it was small meant nothing, maybe the Master knew the heart of his servant and knew he needed a softer place to start from. Maybe the servant just needed to trust the Master.

Hmmmmm

"Supposing a tree fell down, Pooh, when we were underneath it?"
"Supposing it didn't," said Pooh after careful thought.
Piglet was comforted by this.

Alright Enough of Blog Block...

So enough of this blog block already hey! Yesterday I was convinced I was going to blog...instead I learned how to add a signature and I placed a menu on my Photography blog site. Today I don't really have anything profound to blog about but I did realize that I have skipped a couple weeks in my self declared challenge to post a photo of myself once a week.
I realized I don't really like it! lol I guess that's why it's called a challenge.

Despite my whining I do want to stick to my original purpose of putting myself in front of the camera, which if you missed that blog, is about allowing myself to be put back into my family's photo history. (I think any mom or photographer can attest to the fact that you never appear IN the photographs!!)

<span class=Photobucket" border="0">

I also thought I would take out a few metaphorical birds with one stone. I did just get my hair done and for those of you who wanted to see it...voila. Although I have to admit the biggest reason that got this blog done was I was all inspired and curious about shooting photos in RAW mode....very cool. To read more about RAW and I'm going on about check out this link here

Have I Got a Deal For You...

Want to renovate your home? Need new furniture? How about someone to take out your Garbage? Yes?!?

Then I have just the thing - come pick up my Dog!!

She will make all of the above possible in less time that you would believe!!! She sometimes multi-tasks so that more than one of the above is accomplished at once, for instance:
This week she has decided to take my garbage out and drag it all over the carpet...so besides having my Garbage taken out I now get to call someone in to clean the carpet (yes it is that bad!!) or just replace it!

In all seriousness I sat down with Selah (thats our dogs name) just yesterday and explained all the pros and cons of keeping her around. She, of course, looked at me totally unphased.

Pros
Home Security (if you have ever stood at our door, you'll know what this means!)
Teaches kids to stay away from Dogs while they are eating
Teaches kids not to poke a sleeping Dog
Annoys our Landlord

Cons
Sheds hair EVERYWHERE
Muddy footprints EVERYWHERE
Bodily Functions EVERYWHERE (I won't even go into the horror)
Garbage Ripped up EVERYWHERE
Annoys our Landlord
Separation anxiety induced drool (sometimes I open the door to puddles)
Barking wakes up anything
Due to food Allergies she eats the expensive dog food
She believes the pecking order in our house is thus - Ed, Selah, Eliana, Gabe, Pepper (0ur cat), then me.

***Sigh***

So any takers??

I Heart Faces - Back to School - Photo Challange

Weather or not you have children attending school, the sight of school buses rumbling around alerts everyone that school is back in session.
If you were one of the children lucky enough to be ferried around in a school bus, then I am sure you remember the smell of the vinyl seats and f
eel of the cool glass as you pressed your face up against it to get a better look at what was outside. (Because let's face it, who could ever get those windows open!)

Wishing everyone a wonderful school year.

This seems strange..

So this is week 2 of my quest to take and post a photo of myself each week.(What am I talking about?? click here)It actually seems quite strange and a little narcissistic but I am reminding myself that in 20 years when I look back through our photo albums, I want to see myself there along side my family!! Heck, I may even want that in 5 yrs because, let's face it, these body are not a leap forward in the evolutionary process (unfortunately) and they digress each year further and further away from perfection. Ah well, perfection aside, I am so grateful for the body and the life that I get to continue to capture and share with those around me.

This weeks photo was taken just after tub time. Its nothing special, just a snapshot, but it catches one of my favorite moments in the day. Post-Tub-Time. I sure love snuggles after the tub. Soft, clean smelling, little squishy bundles of goodness. Gabe is especially squishy (ie chunky) which makes for great cuddles.

These moments never last long enough though because I have learned the, lets say messy way, that every minute without a diaper is a minute closer to having to start tub time all over again!

Again if you post a pic of yourself - leave a comment so I can come check it out!!

'Nostalgia' Photo Challege

This was a really fun photo challenge for me and my first with I heart Faces.

This was my Great-Grandfather's tractor...it is a 1955 Old 600 Series farm tractor. I have so many memories around this old Ford that has seen generations of my family through all sorts of jobs and chores.

I remember my Grandpa using it to haul logs out from the forest to build Grandma her dream home. I also remember my Dad getting us to sit up on the trailer to make sure the load didn't fall off! Most recently my Dad, now known as Papa, has introduced my daughter to the tractor by taking her for rides. Of course she loves it, just like we all have!

It is the most nostalgic item for me on the farm and so I thought it would be perfect for this shoot and would give my daughter some more tractor time, which she always loves!

It's All All about ME!? Ummm .... really??

So I was bombing around some photoblogs the other day and found one that I thought was kinda fun/cool. Of course I forgot to add it so now I have no idea where I found it in the first place but I thought I would incorporate the idea into my own blog.

Basically the idea is that you take a photo of yourself once a week and share it on your blog. The whole reason behind it was for women to get out from behind the camera and to reintroduce themselves back into their family's photo history! I would love to see any girls that end up reading this blog to do the same...wouldn't it be nice to be seen every once and a while!?!? :)

Anyway so here is my first week's photo...

capture photographic

It was taken at the Airshow in the little window some poor soul has to squeeze into to connect the fueling hose to another plane - while flying. Yikes!

And PLEASE if anyone does start posting pics let me know in the comments I would love to come check them out!!

We Picture This {Reflections}

So I took this picture just goofing around one day with a small wall mirror in one hand and my camera in another. I can't say that I am completely satisfied with my editing...I kinda wanted more of a dreamlike feel...maybe more alice in wonderlandish...

I did like how I looked more real in the mirror than out and I thought the strange shape it made my face was a little interesting!

Anyway I would love some suggestions or ideas for the editing and such...

I am using GIMP right now to edit and a Canon 30D for my photos!
